The Crypts

From ThornsWiki

Deep within the Church of the Moon, a series of winding staircases lead down to a complex labyrinth of rooms known as the Crypts, where generations of very important galdori rest in eternal slumber in stone alcoves. Former Headmasters and Kings and Queens line the walls. It is a great taboo to touch any of the dead bodies, which have been mummified and carefully preserved within beautifully carved stone sarcophagi. The main rooms are carefully marked, so that galdori should not lose their way; however, the rooms beyond a large, circular room known as the Alcove are not marked at all, and descend deep into the bowels of the hill on which Brunnhold was built. It is currently unknown how deep the tunnels go.

The Crypts are used for a variety of things. Sometimes, unusually sinister teachers use them as a place of punishment; students must sweep up the cobwebs by hand and dust the sarcophagi. In several of these rooms there are hidden bookcases, which swivel out from the walls; several dangerous and banned grimoires are said to be available to any particularly intrepid galdor who would venture past the marked area.

Covert meetings between galdori sometimes take place in the Crypts, as well as moonlight lessons in the darker side of magic. They have a long-standing reputation as being haunted, and only the hardier galdori dare to chance being devoured by a hungry ghost.
